Iraqi forces to build sand barrier along Syria border

The Iraqi army’s al-Jazeera and al-Badiya Operations Command on Monday (December 11th) started setting up a sand barrier and barbed wire along the Syria border after Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi announced victory over the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) Saturday.

The barrier will help prevent the infiltration of ISIS elements across the border from Syria, command spokesman Col. Hussein al-Issawi told Diyaruna.

"The army’s engineering and military units started setting up a 3-metre high and 2-metre wide sand barrier along the Syria border, as well as barbed wire which ISIS had removed a large portion of," he told Diyaruna.

"The re-building and closure of the border area is aimed at monitoring and targeting infiltration attempts by terrorist groups from Syria to Iraq," he added.
