Syria regime clears last ISIS pockets west of Euphrates

Syrian regime troops and allied militia have cleared the last pockets held by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) on the west bank of the Euphrates River, AFP reported Thursday (December 7th).

But the group still holds areas on the east bank of the Euphrates in northern Deir Ezzor province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"ISIS no longer has a presence on the western side of the river," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

"Its biggest presence is on the eastern side of the Euphrates, where it still holds around 8% of Deir Ezzor province," he said.

East of the Euphrates, ISIS is under attack by both regime troops and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

ISIS also has a presence in eastern parts of Homs and Hama provinces, and in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus, while an allied group holds positions in the south.
