Chlorine gas attack thwarted in Baghdad

A chlorine gas attack in a residential neighbourhood in Baghdad has been thwarted with great efforts and co-operation between the judiciary and the Iraqi security forces, Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council said Tuesday (October 24th).

"Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements were planning to attack citizens in Baghdad with chlorine gas during the month of Muharram, council spokesman Abdul Sattar Bayraqdar said.

Investigations by the Central Investigation Court, in co-operation with the security services, have uncovered the terror plot, he said.

They also netted "the so-called emir of Abu Ghraib, nicknamed Abu al-Amna, and nine members of his unit", he said.

They admitted during their questioning to being part of ISIS, Bayraqdar said.

"Their confessions unveiled a terrorist scheme to target citizens with thermal bombs made of chlorine during the holy month of Muharram," he added.

The group also has confessed to carrying out multiple terror operations in the capital Baghdad, he said.
