A Baghdad court on Tuesday (September 12th) sentenced to death by hanging an "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) Russian national element, in the first ruling of its kind.
"The Central Criminal Court has heard the case of a Russian defendant belonging to the so-called al-Zarqawi Brigade, an ISIS armed unit," Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Judge Abdul Sattar Bayraqdar said in a statement on Tuesday evening (September 12th).
"The security forces had arrested the defendant during the liberation of western Mosul when he ran out of ammunition," he said.
The defendant, 28, has admitted to carrying out terrorist attacks against the security forces since 2015.
The "death sentence is preliminary and can be appealed", he said.
