ISIS kills 2 Iraqi journalists south of Mosul

Two Iraqi journalists working for Hona Salaheddine television in a village south of Mosul were killed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria", AFP reported Friday (July 7th).

ISIS infiltrated Imam Gharbi in al-Qayyarah earlier in the week, seizing territory in the village, and Iraqi security forces were fighting to oust the jihadists, officers said.

"Colleague Harb Hazaa al-Dulaimi, correspondent for the Hona Salaheddine channel, and Sudad al-Duri, the cameraman for the same station, were martyred" in Imam Gharbi, the channel said.

Photojournalist Ali Jamal Akab was also wounded in the attack, Capt. Khaldoun al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

The three were covering the Iraqi forces' operations in Mosul when they got attacked by ISIS, he said.

Interior ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan confirmed that two journalists were killed in the village and said that others were trapped in a house there along with police.

He said security forces were some two houses away from those trapped, but were being slowed by ISIS snipers.

Al-Qayyarah mayor Khaled al-Jarallah told Diyaruna that the journalists came under attack by ISIS gunmen in an "attempt to prevent them from reporting the truth".
