Iraqi forces battle ISIS in last neighbourhood of Mosul

Iraqi forces on Wednesday (July 5th) rolled into al-Najfi neighbourhood, the last area still under "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) control, where heavy fighting is ongoing, the Ninawa Operations Command said.

"Four alleys, or 500 metres only, remain before Mosul is fully liberated," Commander Lt. Gen. Abdul Ameer Rashid Yarallah told Diyaruna.

Sixty ISIS elements were killed in Wednesday's battles, he said, adding that the official liberation of Mosul will be announced "in the next two days".

"Other military operations are now focused on removing ISIS remnants, combing houses, evacuating civilians and supplying them with food and medical care," he said.

Meanwhile, Iraqi PM Haider al-Abbadi congratulated the Iraqi people and security forces on winning a "major victory" over ISIS in Mosul in remarks broadcast Tuesday night.
