Iraqi forces advance further in Mosul's Old City

Iraqi forces are making advances in Mosul's Old City where battles with the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) have been raging nonstop for the past three days, an Iraqi military spokesman said Tuesday (June 27th).

"Counter-Terrorism Service and Federal Police forces stormed the commercial complex in al-Serj Khana area, al-Ziwani mosque and the medical complex, and have tightened their control over those sites," Joint Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"Our forces are proceeding in an organised manner, and we continue to open safe corridors for citizens to evacuate," he said.

The last outlet available to ISIS militants on the Tigris River is about to be closed, he said, "which will trap them in an area of no more than three square kilometres".
