Iraqi forces make major progress in Mosul

Joint Iraqi forces have gained more ground in Mosul’s Old City from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) over the past two days, the Ninawa Operations Command said Monday (May 22nd).

"Our forces have retaken six new positions in Bab al-Toub, Bab al-Baydh and Ras Sinjar in Mosul’s Old City, and are proceeding with their advance in spite of ISIS's attempts to stop them with suicide attacks," the Command's Elite Forces commander Brig. Gen. Khalaf al-Badran told Diyaruna.

About twenty ISIS fighters were killed in the battles, he said, "including Mohammed Mejbel al-Jawari, the wali of administrative affairs in Ninawa and al-Raqa, who was killed in an international coalition airstrike in al-Zanjili area" of west Mosul.

The joint forces' aim is to reach the Old City's main square and surround ISIS fighters there, he added.
