Arab-Kurd alliance prepares for final push on al-Raqa

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said Friday (May 12th) they were preparing for a final assault on the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) stronghold of al-Raqa that would likely begin next month, AFP reported.

The Arab-Kurd alliance earlier this week captured nearby al-Tabqa and an adjacent dam.

"The attack on al-Raqa will take place in the beginning of the summer," SDF commander Rojda Felat said during a press conference in al-Tabqa, adding that it would likely start in June based on "military and tactical considerations".

The SDF's fight for al-Raqa, Operation Wrath of the Euphrates, has already seen the alliance capture large swathes of the surrounding province with coalition backing.

The alliance has been working to tighten the noose around al-Raqa before a final assault, and is now just eight kilometres from the city at its closest point.
