Iraqi forces retake Mosul train station, market

Iraqi forces said Tuesday (March 14th) that they have made great progress in the battles to retake Mosul's Old City from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).

Iraqi forces recaptured Mosul's train station, which has not been operational since ISIL seized the city in 2014, as well as the Wednesday market, al-Maash street and a number of government buildings, Joint Operations Command Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"Most of the Old City is now under [Iraqi] control," he said.

The battles are currently focused on the areas of al-Bab-al-Hadeed and al-Bab al-Abyad, the last two areas before Iraqi forces reach the banks of the Tigris River, he said.

"Our forces are using light and medium weapons to preserve the lives of civilians given the high population density in the centre of the city where the enemy is hiding among residents," Rasul said.
