Iraqi forces seize ISIL prison outside Mosul

Iraqi forces have seized a prison northwest of Mosul where the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) reportedly executed hundreds of people and held captured Yazidi women, AFP reported Wednesday (March 8th).

Forces from Iraq's 9th Armoured Division and the Furqat al-Abbas paramilitary took Badush prison from the group, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said.

The command did not specify whether anyone was still being held inside the prison when it was seized.

According to Human Rights Watch, ISIL executed up to 600 inmates from Badush prison on June 10th, 2014, forcing them to kneel along a nearby ravine before pushing them in and setting fire to the bodies.

The same year, Iraqi MP Vian Dakhil said the group was holding more than 500 Yazidi women at Badush.
