Iraqi forces recapture Mosul bridge from ISIL

Iraqi forces on Monday (March 6th) recaptured a key bridge held by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) near a government complex in west Mosul.

The Ninawa provincial government buildings are near al-Hurriyah Bridge, which a Rapid Response forces spokesman confirmed had been recaptured on Monday.

Iraqi forces have liberated al-Somoud neighbourhood and the 4th Bridge area, as well as parts of al-Dawasa and al-Dandan neighbourhoods in violent battles with ISIL, the Joint Operations Command said Monday.

“Joint Iraqi forces have killed more than 40 terrorists today, and have destroyed ISIL assets and vehicles, forcing the group to retreat to areas near the Tigris and to fortify there,” Joint Iraqi Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahiya al-Zubaidi told Diyaruna.

The operation to retake west Mosul began February 19th, but had slowed amid several days of bad weather until a renewed drive began Sunday, AFP reported.
