Iraqi forces are proceeding with operations to liberate the towns and villages of western Anbar and are making clear progress against the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Anbar governor Sohaib al-Rawi told Diyaruna on Wednesday (February 8th).
"Joint Iraqi forces and tribesmen have in one week retaken about 20 kilometres of land between Haditha and Anah, and killed and wounded more than 100 ISIL elements," al-Rawi said.
"The goal is to proceed with operations to force the group to flee from these areas and return to its positions in Syria pre-2014," he added.
About 90% of Anbar has been liberated so far, he said, noting that ISIL occupied more than 80% of the province in 2015.
