Iraqi forces arrest ISIL cell in Mosul

Eight "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) gunmen hiding among civilians in newly liberated eastern Mosul were arrested Thursday (February 2nd), the Joint Operations Command said.

Iraqi forces arrested the eight gunmen "who had shaved their beards and changed their clothes to try to blend in with the population and flee the area", Joint Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya al-Zubaidi told Diyaruna.

"Residents informed the authorities about the gunmen, who include an Arab national, and they were arrested with fake IDs in their possession," he said.

"Clearing operations are under way, and many residential neighbourhoods have been cleared and can start welcoming their residents back," he said.

In the past two weeks, 49,000 displaced people have returned to their areas in Mosul and al-Qayyarah, Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement said on Thursday.
