Diyala police crack down on ISIL sleeper cells

Iraqi police kicked off a security campaign to crack down on "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) sleeper cells east of Baqubah, the Iraqi police in Diyala province said Thursday (January 12th).

"The security campaign includes the areas of al-Nada, al-Aqida, al-Mafraq, and Mandali village, 90 kilometres east of Baqubah," Diyala police chief Maj. Gen. Jassim al-Saadi said in a statement.

"The operation is part of the Diyala police security plans to crack down on sleeper cells and put an end to their presence in the province," he said.

Weapons, explosives and stockpiles of ammonium nitrate which is used in making explosives, were seized in the first hours of the operation, al-Saadi said.

"A suspect was also arrested in the ongoing operation," he added.
