Car bomb kills at least 15 in Syria coastal city

At least 15 people were killed Thursday (January 5th) in a car bombing in Syria's coastal city of Jableh, a bastion of the regime, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Syrian state television also reported the blast, blaming it on a suicide bomber and saying there were at least nine dead and 25 wounded, AFP reported.

Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said the bomb went off close to the town's municipal stadium, adding that it was not clear whether those killed were civilians or pro-regime troops.

He said security services had cordoned off the area where the explosion took place.

In May last year, a series of suicide attacks in Jableh and Tartus claimed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) left more than 170 dead.
