Iraqi forces kick off 2nd phase of east Mosul battle

Iraqi forces launched the second phase of the battle to retake eastern Mosul from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) on Thursday (December 29th), the Joint Operations Command said.

"Iraqi forces, including various units of the Iraqi army and the Counter-Terrorism Service, have launched the attack from various fronts," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya al-Zubaidi told Diyaruna.

The second phase is aimed at retaking the remaining residential neighbourhoods in the eastern side of city, he said.

"Clear progress has been made" on all fronts, he said, adding that "parts of al-Quds, al-Salam and al-Artajya neighbourhoods" have been liberated in the battles.
