Iraqi forces liberate Wadi Zaghdan in western Anbar

Iraqi forces recaptured the area of Wadi Zaghdan, south-west of Haditha, from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Wednesday (November 23rd).

"The Iraqi army, supported by the tribes and international coalition fighter jets, have liberated Wadi Zaghdan, an area south-west of Haditha that has a very heavy ISIL presence," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"A large-scale attack launched by our joint forces on Tuesday at dawn ended on Wednesday with the Iraqi flag being raised on the area," he said.

Rasul said that about 30 ISIL elements were killed in the operation.

"We continue to chase the terrorists who fled the area towards the desert on the Syria border," he added.

Iraqi forces found caves in the area that ISIL was using as hideouts and secret headquarters for its elements in western Iraq, Rasul said. They also seized weapons, rockets and lists of names of ISIL elements active in Wadi Zaghdan.
