Iraqi forces launch swift attacks against ISIL east of Mosul

Iraqi forces on Wednesday (November 9th) launched several attacks on "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) defences to the east of Mosul, a senior military Iraqi official said.

"Our forces launched swift attacks against ISIL defences and sites in Mosul’s eastern neighbourhoods," Ninawa Operations Commander Nejim Edin Karim al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

"Dozens of ISIL elements were killed and wounded in six attacks on ISIL positions," he said, adding that Joint Iraqi Forces are now controlling al-Karma, al-Quds, Aden, al-Intessar, al-Shallalat, al-Shaymaa, al-Andalus, Sadat Bawiza and al-Aqub.

Iraqi forces, with support from the international coalition, are now advancing towards al-Qadisiya neighbourhood on the way to the centre of Mosul, he said.

Nearly 42,000 people have fled their homes since last month's start of the operation to recapture Mosul from ISIL, the International Organisation for Migration said Wednesday.

The IOM said on its displacement tracking web page that 41,988 people have been "displaced as a result of the ongoing Mosul operations".

That was an increase of more than 7,000 from the figure the IOM gave the previous day.
