US blacklists ISIL finance operatives in Turkey

The US Treasury on Thursday (September 15th) named two Turkey-based men alleged to be "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) finance facilitators to its sanctions blacklist, AFP reported.

The two men, Mohamad Alsaied Alhmidan, 40, and Hussam Jamous, who is about 33, are charged with providing financial support and services for ISIL and assisting foreign fighters involved with the group, the Treasury said.

Alhmidan is based in an unspecified part of Turkey and carries a Syrian passport. Jamous is based in the city of Antakya near the Syrian border, and also has a Syrian passport.

By placing them on a sanctions list, the Treasury seeks to lock them out of the global financial system by banning US companies and individuals from doing business with them.

"These designations isolate Mohamad Alsaied Alhmidan and Hussam Jamous from the global financial system and expose their activities to the world," said Adam Szubin, Acting Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, in a statement.

"Today's action marks the latest step in Treasury's efforts to cut off ISIL's finances and underscores that ISIL financial facilitators are not beyond the reach of the international campaign to defeat ISIL," he said.
