Iraq on Wednesday (August 31st) hanged seven men at al-Nasiriyah prison who had been convicted of belonging to al-Qaeda, AFP reported.
The seven, who are of various nationalities, were detained more than four years ago and found guilty of terrorist activities with the group that later formed the backbone of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).
"Death sentences by hanging were carried out Wednesday against seven terrorists," said Dhi Qar provincial council member Dakhel Radhi.
An al-Nasiriyah prison official said around 60 other convicts from various countries were still being held in al-Nasiriyah prison on similar charges.
He did not say how many of them had been sentenced to death.
