Turkey vows to help push ISIL from Jarablus

Turkey pledged Tuesday (August 23rd) to give "all kinds of support" to push the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) out of the Syrian border town of Jarabulus, AFP reported.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made the promise amid reports Ankara-backed forces were massing on the border in anticipation of an impending operation against ISIL.

"We do not want ISIL to exist in Iraq and Syria," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Turkey shelled ISIL positions in Syria on Tuesday for a second day, in response to mortar fire from across the border.

Two mortar rounds hit the southeastern Turkish town of Karkamis, close to the border and facing the Syrian town of Jarablus, which is held by ISIL, Turkish media reported.

Turkish artillery hit four ISIL positions in Jarablus with around 60 shells early Tuesday, after shelling ISIL targets in northern Syria on Monday evening.

Police warned residents of Karkamis through loudspeakers to evacuate the town "for safety reasons".
