Iraqi forces kill 'many' ISIL fighters in Anbar

Iraqi airstrikes destroyed four "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) headquarters in northern Anbar province, Anbar Operations Command said Friday (July 22nd).

“The headquarters that were targeted by the Iraqi air force are located in several areas in northern Ramadi,” Anbar Military Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Mahalawi said in a press conference.

“It has been confirmed to us that those headquarters have been fully destroyed and that many inside, including non-Iraqis, have been killed,” al-Mahalawi said.

In addition, the operation to liberate al-Khalidiya Island is ongoing, and ISIL has tried to find an outlet to escape the area, Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Hadi Kassar Erzaij said in a press conference Friday (July 22nd).

"Our primary goal is to take out ISIL gunmen before fully liberating the town, starting from Euphrates River in the north and ending with the residential area of the island, located 20 kilometres east of Ramadi," he said.

“Iraqi forces this morning killed three terrorists and destroyed their vehicle as they tried to escape in Albu Faour area on al-Khalidiya Island itself,” he said.
