Iraqi forces begin operation to liberate al-Khalidiya Island

A large-scale military operation has kicked off to liberate al-Khalidiya Island, 20 kilometres east of Ramadi, from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Iraqi police in Anbar province said Thursday (July 21st).

“After reinforcements arrived from Baghdad, Iraqi forces started besieging the area, which is considered to be the last ISIL stronghold in the eastern part of Anbar,” Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Hadi Kassar Erzaij told Diyaruna.

Iraqi forces plan to gradually advance to avoid improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and landmines, he said, adding that coalition jets have already begun hitting ISIL sites in the area.
