Coalition strikes ISIL south of Mosul, kills 'wali'

Coalition aircraft in co-ordination with Iraqi forces launched several successful airstrikes on "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) targets south of Mosul, authorities reported Monday (July 11th).

“An international coalition airstrike on Sunday morning targeted an ISIL headquarters in al-Shirqat, killing Abu Abdul Azeem al-Ajaeely, a senior ISIL leader in northern Iraq, along with five others,” assistant Salaheddine police chief Col. Muhsen al-Duri told Mawtani.

“Al-Ajaeely had served as 'wali' of Salaheddine and then as 'military commander' of al-Shirqat after ISIL was crushed in Tikrit last year,” he said.

Coalition fighter jets also launched three airstrikes against "ISIL targets in Ajahla village and al-Qayyara, south of Mosul", Interior Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan told Mawtani.

One of the strikes hit a vehicle carrying ISIL elements, killing nine of them, he said, while another hit an oil tanker packed with explosives in al-Marir village near al-Qayyara.
