Iraq says 260 ISIL vehicles destroyed in Fallujah flight

Airstrikes on "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters fleeing after their defeat in Fallujah have destroyed more than 260 vehicles and killed at least 150 elements, AFP reported Thursday (June 30th).

The strikes began late on Tuesday as hundreds of vehicles carrying weapons and ammunition attempted to leave ISIL's last positions to the west of the city, heading south of Fallujah toward the desert, apparently to areas ISIL still controls near the border with Syria, the joint operations command said.

"Our heroes in the military aviation destroyed more than 200 vehicles," Iraqi Ministry of Defence spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul said.

They also seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition, he said, adding that at least 150 ISIL elements were killed in the strikes.

At least another 60 ISIL vehicles were destroyed later by airstrikes conducted by Iraqi and coalition aircraft on a convoy heading north-west of Fallujah, Anbar operations commander Ismail al-Mahalawi told AFP.

Iraqi forces on Sunday retook full control of Fallujah after a vast operation that was launched on May 22nd.
