Joint forces retake 9 villages near Mosul

Joint Iraqi forces have freed nine villages south-east of Mosul from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) with support from international coalition aircraft, the Ninawa operations command said Friday (June 24th).

"For several days, Iraqi forces have been engaged in fighting with ISIL elements, which has yielded excellent results and inflicted heavy losses on the group," Ninawa operations commander Nejim Edin Karim al-Juburi said in a statement.

"Our forces have managed to liberate more than 127 square kilometres and nine villages south-east of Mosul," al-Juburi said.

"Operations are ongoing according to plan to deplete the enemy's numbers and liberate the areas it has taken over," he said, noting that international coalition warplanes have been providing crucial support to the troops in the battle.
