Aid convoy heads for Syria's besieged al-Waer: UN

The UN said a large aid convoy is expected to arrive Thursday (June 16th) in al-Waer, a besieged town in Syria's Homs, AFP reported.

"We are ready loaded with a large convoy to go to the besieged town of al-Waer," said Jan Egeland, who heads a UN-backed international humanitarian taskforce for Syria.

If the aid convoy gets through, it would be of "great significance", he said, pointing out that the opposition-held town in Homs, encircled by the regime, had been "without supplies for more than three months".

Conditions in the town are "terrible", he said, noting that many have died due the lack of humanitarian supplies.

Last week, aid finally reached the besieged town of Daraya for the first time since 2012 and Douma for the first time since 2014.

Egeland said that if the delivery to al-Waer goes through as planned Thursday, the UN will have delivered aid to 16 of Syria's 18 besieged areas since mid-February.

He said he hoped deliveries to the remaining two areas, Arbin and Zamalka in the rural suburbs of Damascus, could take place in the "coming days".

Egeland also hailed a 48-hour truce that took hold Thursday in Aleppo city, urging all sides "to use this window of opportunity" to try to cement a broader and more long-lasting halt in the violence.
