ISIL mortar round kills Iraqi photographer in Fallujah

A photographer employed by Iraq's elite Interior Ministry forces was killed Wednesday (June 15th) by a mortar round during fighting with the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in the city of Fallujah, police officers said.

The incident took place in the city's southern neighbourhood of al-Shohada, which the Iraqi government recently retook from ISIL, AFP reported.

"Photographer Fadil al-Garaawi was killed when a mortar round struck near a group of journalists and members of the security forces in Fallujah," a senior federal police officer said.

Three armed members of the security forces were also killed in the same incident, the officer said.

The 45-year-old photographer also contributed to Iraqi news outlets.
