ISIL suffers heavy losses in various areas of Iraq

Iraqi forces killed 33 "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) elements after they attempted to attack Zangoura in northern Ramadi, Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Hadi Kassar Erzaij said Thursday (June 16th).

"Security forces have rebuffed an ISIL attack on Zangoura, killing 33 ISIL elements and blowing up a booby-trapped vehicle," Erzaij told Al-Shorfa.

Iraqi troops are in full control of the security situation in the area, he said, adding that they have deployed a number of patrols to protect civilians and deal with any suspicious activity.

In northern Iraq, an international coalition airstrike killed 9 ISIL elements and wounded at least 20 others near al-Sharqat to the south of Mosul, the Ninawa operations command said.

"International coalition fighter jets destroyed an ISIL ammunition depot and a sleeping quarter in al-Hay al-Sinaei in al-Sharqat," Ninawa operations commander Nejim Edin Karim al-Jubury told Al-Shorfa.

"Available information confirms that nine terrorists have been killed and at least 20 others have been wounded, and that some three tonnes of explosives, weapons and ammunition have been destroyed," he said.

The explosives continued to burn for more than six hours following the airstrike, he added.
