Iraq arrests over 500 ISIL suspects fleeing with civilians

Iraqi forces have detained more than 500 suspected "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) members trying to sneak out of the city of Fallujah by blending in with fleeing civilians, AFP reported Monday (June 13th).

"We have arrested 546 suspected terrorists who had fled by taking advantage of the movements of displaced families over the past two weeks," said Hadi Rzayej, Anbar province police chief.

"Many of them were using fake IDs," he said.

When civilians reach government forces, teenage boys and adult men are screened separately. Some are released after a few hours while others undergo more thorough interrogation.

Until last week, an estimated 50,000 civilians were still trapped in the centre of the city, one of ISIL's last bastions in Iraq.

The Iraqi army opened two safe corridors to the west and north-west of the city that have allowed thousands of civilians to escape ISIL rule and reach government-run displacement camps.

"The first safe corridor is west of town, and it was secured after removing dozens of landmines that had previously prevented families from leaving," Ministry of Defence spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Al-Shorfa.

"Another safe corridor was provided Sunday in al-Halabsa, north-west of Fallujah, through a palm tree orchard," he added.
