Syria raids stall food aid distribution in Daraya

Syria's regime bombarded an opposition-held town outside Damascus on Friday (June 10th), preventing besieged residents from receiving food aid, AFP reported.

A convoy of food aid approved by Damascus reached the town of Daraya late Thursday for the first time since the regime laid siege to the town in 2012.

"There has been intense random barrel bombing of the town since 9 a.m. local time," said local council member Shadi Matar, with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights saying at least 20 barrel bombs had stalled food aid distribution.

"Aid received by the council has not been distributed yet because of the intensity of the raids," Matar said, adding that the raids were ongoing.

Trucks entered Daraya on Thursday with "food aid, including dry goods and flour, non-food aid as well as medical aid", said Syrian Red Crescent operations director Tamam Mehrez.

A World Food Programme worker said the convoy carried 480 food rations for around 2,400 people for a month.

The UN's humanitarian office (OCHA) said Friday the agency was still waiting for permission from Damascus to deliver aid to two besieged areas.

"The UN is able to deliver to 17 out of 19 besieged areas," said OCHA spokesman Jens Laerke.

The regime has so far withheld written approval for al-Waer in Homs province and Zabadani in rural Damascus, the UN said.
