Suicide bomber strikes near mosque in Syria's Latakia

A suicide attack near a mosque killed at least two people and wounded another four in the regime stronghold of Latakia in north-western Syria on Thursday (June 2nd), AFP reported.

An assailant on a motorcycle blew himself up near the Khulafa al-Rashideen mosque in the Daatur district of Latakia as people emerged from afternoon prayers, state television said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three people had been killed in the attack, with state media reporting at least two dead.

Last month, bombings claimed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in the nearby coastal cities of Jableh and Tartus killed at least 170 people.

ISIL is not known to have a significant presence in Syria's coastal provinces, where its rival, al-Nusra Front, is much more prominent.
