The US Department of State's Rewards for Justice programme announced Friday (April 10th) a reward of $10 million for "any information on the activities, networks and associates" of Muhammad Kawtharani, a senior Lebanese Hizbullah commander.
Kawtharani is accused of playing a key role in co-ordinating pro-Iran groups in Iraq.
Kawtharani is a senior official of the Lebanese movement in Iraq, "and has taken over some of the political co-ordination of Iran-aligned paramilitary groups formerly organised by Qassem Soleimani", the State Department said in a statement.
Soleimani, the former leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force (IRGC-QF), was killed in early January in a US strike targeting him in Baghdad.
According to Washington, Kawtharani, already on the US blacklist for terrorism since 2013, "facilitates the actions of groups operating outside the control of the Government of Iraq that have violently suppressed protests" or "attacked foreign diplomatic missions".
As a member of Hizbullah's Political Council, Kawtharani has worked to promote the group's interests in Iraq, including Hizbullah efforts to provide "training, funding, political, and logistical support to Iraqi Shia insurgent groups".
