A group calling itself "al-Qaqaa" has claimed a Tuesday (August 8th) attack on an "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) checkpoint near the Syrian city of Albu Kamal in Deir Ezzor, activists told Diyaruna.

The early morning attack targeted a checkpoint near the entrance to the town of al-Jalaa in the industrial area, said Ayham al-Ali, an activist with the Albu Kamal Natives Corner Facebook page.

The gunmen killed or wounded around 10 fighters manning the checkpoint, he told Diyaruna, adding that since the attack, ISIS has been going to extraordinary lengths to apprehend the gunmen.

"At least two ISIS elements were killed, including a man known as Khattab al-Deir," he said.

According to local residents, al-Ali said, the sound of heavy gunfire broke out at around 2:30 a.m. and continued for half an hour.

Soon after, ISIS ambulances headed to the scene.

"Following the attack, the group put its elements in the area on alert and set up several checkpoints that checked identification documents," he said.

ISIS elements also vacated a number of their posts, including those at al-Jalaa secondary school and al-Nazl al-Barrani area, al-Ali said.

Following the attack, a number of Syrian opposition websites and media activists received a statement issued by a group calling itself al-Qaqaa, claiming responsibility for the attack.

According to the statement, the attack targeted a checkpoint commanded by ISIS Diwan al-Sahha (health bureau) head Abu al-Mutasem Hanafi Ibrahim and set fire to four vehicles belonging to the group.

In its statement, the group said it would carry out similar attacks on a daily basis to demand that ISIS ease the pressure on Albu Kamal area residents.

It also demanded that ISIS suspend its conscription decree and its edict stipulating that transactions be conducted using its own currency.
