UN mission for Iraq inaugurates office in Mosul

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Thursday (September 19th) inaugurated its office in Mosul to help Ninawa residents and contribute to stabilisation efforts in liberated cities.

"The inauguration of the office marked a milestone, a step that will deepen our collaboration, enhance our co-ordination and provide a constant interface with the UN for all stakeholders," the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said at the inauguration ceremony.

Ninawa provincial council head Saido Chato said this step will help 750,000 displaced people in need of services.

"We hope the office will provide services to the people of Ninawa in general, as we still have more than 750,000 displaced people in need of services," he said, adding that "many areas are damaged and need reconstruction".

"We hope that the UN will help, through this office, to return displaced people back to their homes and reconstruct Ninawa," he added.

"Ninawa’s local government has achieved major successes in different sectors," Hennis-Plasschaert said. These efforts "should be built on by offering Ninawa material and moral assistance, especially after their achievements have helped displaced people return, stimulated the economy and improved security".
