Iraqi forces foil ISIS infiltration attempt from Syria

Iraqi border guard forces have intercepted three "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements trying to infiltrate into Iraq from Syria, the Ninawa Operations Command said Friday (August 16th).

"The army on Thursday night thwarted an attempt by three Iraqi ISIS militants to infiltrate into Iraq from Syria taking advantage of bad weather and low visibility caused by fog," commander Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Zawbaie told Diyaruna.

The three militants were arrested and Kalashnikovs in their possession were seized, he said.

"After verifying their identities, we found out that two of them are wanted for terrorism-related charges," he said. "They were taken to a security detention facility pending their handover to the judicial authorities in Ninawa."
