Iraqi army beefs up security at Syria border

Iraq's Joint Operations Command announced Wednesday (August 14th) it has finished setting up new monitoring towers at the country's border with Syria as part of a comprehensive plan to close all the loopholes that terrorists and smuggling networks might exploit to infiltrate into Iraq.

"Iraqi security forces have completed the installation of dozens of monitoring and night surveillance towers and night thermal cameras, and set up new earthen berms and barbed wires," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"The new measures are part of an extensive programme aimed at reinforcing and fully sealing the Syria border and preventing any activities that may undermine Iraq’s security and sovereignty," he said.

Reinforcement at the border will continue, he said, as will the search for underground tunnels dug by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) before they were expelled from Anbar province.
