New programme to encourage Iraqi IDPs to return to liberated cities

A new programme has been launched to encourage displaced people to return to their cities that have been liberated from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement said Thursday (August 8th).

New measures include "a financial grant of 1.5 million Iraqi dinars ($1,260) for each returning family and other forms of assistance, including food aid, to help them re-settle in their areas," the head of Kirkuk's Migration and Displacement Directorate, Ammar Sabah, said in a statement.

He said that 15,000 families from several cities in Kirkuk have been covered under the new programme, while 16,000 other families are now preparing to submit their application so they can also be included under the grant.

The ministry has been distributing relief and humanitarian aid to returnees and displaced people, including those residing in camps, Sabah said.
