Syrian regime advances in Hama after ending truce

Syrian regime loyalists captured a town and a village from extremist and opposition groups in north-west Syria on Wednesday (August 7th), after fierce clashes that killed nearly 30 combatants overnight, AFP reported.

The town of al-Zakat and al-Arbaeen village in Hama province came under regime control on Wednesday morning, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Observatory said the overnight clashes killed 10 regime loyalists and 18 opposition fighters, including 13 extremists.

The push also has seen regime loyalists reach the edges of the opposition-held town of Kafr Zita and the village of al-Latamna in northern Hama, according to the Observatory.

Extremist alliance Tahrir al-Sham has since January controlled northern Hama as well as all of Idlib and adjacent parts of Aleppo and Latakia provinces.

Syrian regime warplanes began to pummel the Idlib region again on Monday after announcing the cancellation of a short-lived ceasefire.

"The regime leveraged the ceasefire to send reinforcements to northern Hama," said Observatory head Rami Abdul Rahman.
