17 Yazidi mass graves exhumed in Sinjar

The Iraqi government has exhumed 17 mass graves believed to contain the Yazidi victims of the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in Sinjar, the Secretary-General of the Iraqi Council of Ministers Mahdi al-Allaq said Thursday (August 1st).

"In co-operation with international organisations, the government has exhumed 17 mass graves of Yazidis in Sinjar, out of a total of 73 graves in northern Iraq," al-Allaq said in a speech commemorating the 3rd anniversary of the genocide of Yazidis by ISIS.

"We continue to work with international organisations to open the remaining graves," he said.

"The government has approached the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research about establishing the first university in Sinjar," he said, noting that a hospital specialised in treating victims of violence and women freed from ISIS has already been opened in the district.
