Rockets, explosive vests found in underground cache near Baghdad

A cache containing weapons, explosive vests and rockets was found near Baghdad during a joint police-army operation carried out Wednesday (July 31st) at dawn, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

"Police and army forces found an underground cache belonging to the 'Islamic State of Iraq and Syria' (ISIS) in al-Maameer in Abu Ghrayeb district, containing three explosive vests, short-range rockets, weapons, various ammunition, and locally-made improvised explosive devices (IEDs)," ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Saad Maan told Diyaruna.

The joint force also found documents and information relating to ISIS in the same cache, he said.

"The terrorists are leaving their weapons behind underground in the hope of re-using them later, but the security forces are trying to prevent that through continuous searches, especially around Baghdad," he added.
