3 ISIS tunnels destroyed on Syria border

Iraqi forces have uncovered three underground tunnels between Iraq and Syria used by "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements for moving between the two countries, the al-Jazeera and al-Badiya Operations Command said Tuesday (July 23rd).

"The first tunnel is located in al-Qaim [Anbar province] and the other two in Husayba and al-Jazeera opposite Syria’s Deir Ezzor," commander Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Muhammadi told Diyaruna.

The tunnels vary in length, with one reaching up to 1,700 metres long, and they were used by ISIS elements for movement and the transfer of weapons, he said.

All three tunnels have now been fully destroyed, he said, noting that search operations for ISIS hideouts are under way along the border strip between the two countries.
