Mosul makes progress in removing ISIS remnants of war

Operations to remove "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants of war from western Mosul have made significant progress, Mosul mayor Zuhair al-Araji said Monday (July 1st).

"Operations to remove the remnants of war from western Mosul are 80% complete," al-Araji said at a press conference following a meeting in central Mosul with UN representatives.

Civil defence teams, engineering units, Mosul municipality, Mosul health directorate and international and UN organisations are taking part in the security and engineering efforts to remove landmines, he said.

"The areas that remain are agricultural lands that mostly contain explosive vests and unexploded bombs, which is impeding our work," he said, noting that most of the war remnants in these areas are buried under the rubble.
