Russian airstrikes kill 10 civilians in northwest Syria

Russian airstrikes killed 10 civilians, including five children, in raids on Idlib province, just hours after Moscow announced a ceasefire in that region, AFP reported Monday (May 20th).

The Russian army said overnight air raids on Kafr Nabel came after it pinpointed the area as the launchpad for rocket fire on its key Syria airbase of Hmeimim.

Tahrir al-Sham controls much of Idlib and parts of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russian airstrikes killed five children, four women, and one man in Kafr Nabel.

The raids hit near a hospital in the town, knocking it out of service, the Observatory said.

Six other civilians also died in bombardment by Syrian regime forces in other parts of the Idlib region on Sunday, the Observatory said.

Fighting raged in the north of Hama province between regime allies and extremists early Monday, the Observatory said, after relative respite in bombardment over the past three days.

Russian warplanes pounded the south of Idlib province, while regime aircraft targeted the north of Hama province with machine guns, missiles, and crude barrel bombs, it added.

The Russian airstrikes come after Moscow on Sunday said regime forces had "unilaterally ceased fire in the Idlib de-escalation zone" from midnight May 18th.
