Displaced Anbar families return to their homes

Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement on Monday (May 20th) announced that 192 displaced families had returned to their original areas of residence in the Anbar province border town of al-Qaim.

The families were displaced after the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" overran swathes of Anbar in the summer of 2014.

They were brought back to al-Qaim from displacement camps in Ameriyat al-Fallujah and the tourist city on the shores of Lake Habbaniyah, the ministry said in a statement.

Ministry teams in Anbar received the returnees in co-ordination with the Ministry of Transport, local authorities and the security forces "after the necessary administrative and security measures were taken", the ministry said.

“The ministry’s voluntary return programme will continue until the last displaced person returns and the last camp is closed,” the statement added.
