Iraqi forces arrest ISIS leader in eastern Mosul

Iraqi forces have arrested an "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) leader in eastern Mosul, the Ministry of Defence said Sunday (May 19th).

“Acting on prior tips from locals, Iraqi special forces arrested an ISIS leader known as Jihad al-Ansari, who had served as the emir of the so-called Mortar Battalion in Ninawa Valley,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The arrest took place in eastern Mosul, where he was found at a residential building,” the statement said, noting that prior to the arrest, al-Ansari had been making concerted efforts to avoid being identified.
