Germany repatriates ISIS children from Iraq

Germany has repatriated from Iraq several children of jailed extremists with the consent of the children's parents, AFP reported Friday (April 5th).

They are now in the custody of their relatives in Germany, a foreign ministry source said.

Among the first young returnees to Germany were three children who arrived with their mother at Stuttgart airport on Thursday, their lawyer Mahmut Erdem said in a statement.

They were taken into custody immediately, the lawyer said.

The foreign ministry said at least eight Germans were jailed in Iraq, after they were convicted of belonging to the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS).

The ministry said it was aware of cases of German nationals in custody in northern Syria, but did not have direct consular access to them.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Friday he was open to allowing the return of orphaned children of an Australian extremist in a Syrian refugee camp following their desperate plea for help.

Morrison said his government was working with the Red Cross so the children could leave al-Hol camp in Syria and Australian officials could assess them.
