UN envoy says a 'new Syria' starts with reconciliation

The UN envoy for Syria on Tuesday (March 19th) said a solution to the conflict begins with confidence-building measures and reconciliation between warring parties, AFP reported.

"Path to a new Syria begins with confidence-building and reconciliation," Norwegian diplomat Geir Pedersen said in a social media post. "Syrians need to come together to decide and build [a] future."

His comments came after he visited Homs, where he met the governor of Homs, the UN team in the area as well as displaced Syrians living in camps.

He described the scale of challenges facing Syria and Syrians as "immense".

Pedersen also toured the former opposition stronghold of Baba Amr, which was recaptured by regime forces in 2012 after almost a month of heavy shelling.

There has been little reconstruction in the Homs district since the regime seized the area.

Since the start of January, when he began his new role, Pedersen has travelled extensively to meet with the regime, opposition and others.
