Iraqi authorities seize drug shipment from Iran

A drug shipment from Iran was seized before it was smuggled into Iraq through the al-Shib border crossing, Iraqi authorities in Maysan province, southern Iraq, said Thursday (March 7th).

"The Customs department at al-Shib Border Crossing thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs and hashish from Iran hidden in a frozen chicken shipment," Col. Wael Abdul Sattar al-Halafi of Maysan police told Diyaruna.

Security forces seized five kilogrammes of hashish and other drugs, including 4,000 narcotic and hallucination pills, he said.

"The truck driver was arrested, and an investigation was opened into the incident," he added.

"Intensive measures taken by the Customs Authority and security forces at border crossings with Iran have helped thwart many attempts to smuggle drugs into Iraq," he said.
